Starting nursery

If you would like a place for your child at our nursery, please make an appointment and we will show you round the nursery, introduce you to staff and take the time to explain everything you need to know. You can make an appointment by phoning 01743 354779 or by using our contact form. We look forward to meeting you!

We will arrange some stay and play for you and your child to settle in, and take time to get to know your child, building a relationship to enable them to feel happy and secure.

Your child will be allocated a key person who will ask you questions to find out about your child's interests, likes and dislikes, and specific needs.  Our aim is to ensure parents and children feel happy about starting nursery.  Our nursery staff team is small enough to care about your child and to develop good interpersonal relationships and also large enough to have a wide range of experience and knowledge to help your child to develop.

Every child has a key person at nursery, this adult will care for them and talk with parents, keep records and make observations about each child's progress. If a family has 2 or more children attending the children will have the same key person.

Attachments are the emotional bonds that are made between young children, their parents and other carers such as the Key Person. All of these important people have a special role to play in providing the right kind of environment for children where they will flourish. Environments are not just physical spaces because they are the atmosphere created through warm and caring relationships, where children are respected and valued and their well-being comes before anything else. At the Column children’s voices are listened to and they thrive socially and emotionally.  At The Column Nursery we aim to provide a homely, relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

each child has a peg for their bag and coat, older children like to chalk their own name on to the board above their peg

What happens if my child is ill?

Our policy for ill or infectious children is discussed with parents at the time admission. We will contact parents during the day if a child becomes ill to discuss the best course of care for their child.

While we endeavour to comfort and care for any child taken ill during the day; we cannot take responsibility for a child arriving at nursery with a temperature or other symptoms.

We cannot provide care for children who have an infectious disease or sickness and diarrhoea. Children or adults who have these symptoms must stay away from nursery for a minimum of 24 hours after the last symptom has cleared.

Staff can advise you on exclusion periods for common illnesses or talk to your health visitor or family doctor.
